Final Reflection
Prior to taking this course I couldn't tell you the last time I had read a book. When I registered for the course "How Writers Read" I had no idea what to expect. An advisor told me to take the class so I gave it a shot, and I'm so glad I did. I have never taken a class like this before. This class made me think in ways that I never explored before. I discovered things like how to find controlling values in a text and counter ideas. I learned about the registers of the text (thematic, mimetic, and synthetic). Before this class I did not even know these things existed.
In the beginning of the semester I made a long list of books I had plan to read. I put ten books on the proposal and I only got through one. At first I was getting really down on myself that I only managed to read one book, but then I remembered how much I had learned from just reading that one book. I would have never even thought about picking up a book like Tender Is The Night before this class. I stepped out of my comfort zone and by doing this I became a completely different reader. Before this class, I used to zip through the pages of books as fast as possible just to get it over with, but now I take my time with the text. I'm constantly asking myself questions as I read and I try to come up with the answers. Although this class is over, I still want to continue my reading journey. I am going to attempt to read as many books on my reading proposal as I can over the course of the winter break. I think doing so would really help me improve as a reader overall. I am so thankful for taking this course. I learned so much and I'm eager to learn and explore more with the methods I learned in the class. I no longer view reading as a chore, because I found a new way to read. |
